Program Goals and Impact

Adaptive Music Collaborative envisions a world where every child, regardless of ability, has meaningful access to music as a source of connection, expression, and belonging. We create inclusive, adaptive music experiences that honor each child’s unique way of engaging with the world, using music as both an artistic and therapeutic pathway

Adaptive Music Collaborative envisions a world where every child, regardless of ability, has meaningful access to music as a source of connection, expression, and belonging. We create inclusive, adaptive music experiences that honor each child’s unique way of engaging with the world, using music as both an artistic and therapeutic pathway for growth.

Through partnerships with schools, families, therapists, musicians, and community organizations, we empower children with learning differences to build confidence, communication, and joy. Our work celebrates ability over limitation and builds communities where every child’s voice is heard, valued, and expressed through music.

Adaptive Music Collaborative programs are delivered through a series of themed, hands-on music sessions designed for children with learning differences. Each session blends structured routine with creative exploration and includes welcome songs, rhythm and movement activities, adaptive instrument play, and opportunities for self-expression through music, storytelling, and collaborative performance. Children explore a variety of accessible instruments, create their own musical tools, and engage in group music-making that supports communication, motor skills, emotional regulation, and social connection. Programs culminate in a celebratory showcase that invites families and the school community to witness each child’s growth, creativity, and confidence, reinforcing music as a powerful tool for inclusion, belonging, and personal development.

Our Story

Our Story

The Adaptive Music Collaborative began with a shared passion and a vision. With over 40 combined years in special education, Dr. Elliott Nerland and Eric Bloomstein, Ed.S., have spent our careers working alongside children with diverse abilities. We’re also lifelong music lovers. One day, at a festival, we had an epiphany: what if we could open the world of music to those who don’t often have easy access? Not just as spectators, but as creators, leaders, and joyful explorers.

The Adaptive Music Collaborative was born from the belief that music should be a tool of joy, expression, and connection. We wanted to offer something beyond formal instruction; an experience where children can communicate, feel new sensations, and explore the world through sound. We bring instruments, costumes, and laughter, making music a celebration of life. At the heart of it all, we simply care deeply and want to create a space where every child feels seen, heard, and celebrated.

Our Faculty

Our faculty is made up of highly trained and experienced musicians and educators who are passionate about teaching, music and sharing meaningful experiences with all children. Our partnership with faculty and students at the University of Rhode Island gives a wealth of research and knowledge to support our mission. They are dedicated to helping students, families, and staff have fun experiences filled with joy, love, and support.
